Aromatherapy: Healing with Essential Oils

Aromatherapy has a history of more than 5000 years, and now it is once more gaining popularity.

We all got a scare from the side effects with chemical drugs. We know these drugs undermine the self healing ability of our body, and we don’t want to be dependent on these drugs any longer. We want to take responsibility for our own body, and put more emphasis on preventing disease.

It’s becoming more and more clear that almost all diseases find their origin in the psyche, and that only a holistic way of healing can cure body and soul. Traditional medicine has neglected the search for healing methods which benefit all aspects. This is why holistic, natural healing, such as Aromatherapy, finds more and more support.

Aromatherapy operates like all natural healing systems: it strengthens the self healing ability of the body. Besides that it brings about a change of mood, and regulates physical and psychological processes which have gotten out of balance. So it works in equal measure on body and soul: Holistic.

Aromatherapy can open our mind for the beauty, the uniqueness and the preciousness of the world around us. It guides us to inner peace, and gives an impulse to search for the purpose in life.

Essential oils posess unique qualities from which their effectiveness and their multiple possibilities of application stem. Because of their immediate effect upon our brains and the guiding mechanisms, they regulate psychological and physical processes.

This is why using Essential oils with aroma-lamps, aerosol devices and through inhalation is used for treatment of depression, insomnia, stress complaints and anxiety.

Aromatherapy combines well with almost all other medicine. For instance: in combination with Bach Flowertherapy it works beautifully. On the other hand, combining it with Homeopathy can prove less beneficial.

Never apply essential oils directly and purely to the skin. (Exceptions: Lavender and Tea Tree Oil) Guideline for diluting: for facial cream, body lotion or massage oil you use a maximum of 2,5% essential oil. So, per 10 ml. you use not more than 5 drops of essential oil. From Peppermint oil you shouldn’t use more than 1%!

• Aromatherapy does not always combine well with Homeopathy. Some of the Essential oils can hinder of even neutralize Homeopathic drugs. When using Homeopathic remedies, you should stay away from Mint, Camphor and Chamomile oil.

Do not take Essential oils orally unless under guidance of a professional Aromatherapist!

• When you are suffering from high bloodpressure, or if you are pregnant, never use Rosemary oil; it elevates bloodpressure.

• Always test creams, body lotions and massage oils, which you want to apply to sensitive skin like the face and neck, on your inner elbow. Some people are particularly sensitive to some Essential oils. They might suffer a – sometimes violent – allergic reaction. If you don’t get any reaction, like itching or a rash, your homemade product is safe to use.

• Keep Essential oils out of reach of small children!

Some applications of Essential Oils:

The Aroma lamp:
Put 5 to 10 drops of (a combination of) Essential oils in a small dish filled with water. Place this over a small candle flame. Be sure to refill the water to prevent the Essential oil from burning.

Put a few drops (3 to 5) in a bowl of hot water. Caution: Never use more than 1 or 2 drops Thyme oil. Asthma patients should not steam for this may cause an asthma attack.
Put a large towel over your head and over the bowl. Close your eyes and breathe in the vapors for approximately 5 minutes.
Colds: use 2 drops of Eucalyptus, 2 drops of Mountain Pine and 2 drops of Lemon oil.
Flu: 3 drops of Niaouli (Melaleuca Viridiflora), 4 drops of Sage, 1 drop of Thyme oil.

In the Bathtub:
Honey Bath: Honey is anti-inflammatory and very beneficial to the skin. Mix 5 to 10 drops of Essential oil of choice with 3 to 4 tablespoons of fluid honey, and stir this into the bathwater.
Cream Bath: Bathe like Cleopatra in fragrance and cream! Cream is a natural emulsifier, and a moisturizer which prevents dry skin. Mix 10 to 15 drops of Essential oils with 3 to 4 tablespoons of cream. Add to bathwater.

Add 5 to 10 drops of Essential oils of choice to a handful of Dead Sea-salt. Mix this into your footbath water. (This way the oils will blend into the water instead of floating on top of it.)

Shower Gel:
Take a No Add Shower gel (no perfumes or other additives). To 50 ml. of shower gel you add no more than 25 drops of Essential oils.

For the face and the neck Rose, Geranium, Lavender and Orange oils are lovely. If you want an anti-wrinkle cream, add Incense oil. Never more than 2,5% in total! Again, use a cream without any additives or perfume.
